Remember when the internet was rattled with the news of Instagram notifying users when you screenshot their stories? Well, if you’re a self-confessed social media lurker, then you'll be glad to know that the app finally decided to undo this feature. After several months of testing, Instagram has officially stopped alerting users when their stories are being screengrabbed. Is that a sigh of relief we hear?
Instagram confirmed the news to BuzzFeed, but provided no statement as to why they decided to end the feature. This, however, could be in line with what the Facebook subsidiary revealed when the update was still on trial period: “We are always testing ways to improve the experience on Instagram and make it easier to share any moment with the people who matter to you.”
Slate, like most of the internet, seems to be supportive of this change. They even wrote about how screenshotting is one of the best inventions of the internet age. “Screenshotting should not be punishable behavior. Screenshots are great, and a good one can be one of the few remaining honest-to-goodness pleasures in this forsaken world.”
Even Twitter seems happy with the news:
Fear no more, people! Instagram no longer snitches, so you’re free to lurk all you want.
