Having spent 10 years in Texas, USA, Zaira Quan’s sister and brother-in-law thought of starting work on their future retirement home.
A nurse and an instrumentation engineer by profession, they sought inspiration from Netflix tours of modern homes and hotel accommodations, as well as wood cabins overseas. After Zaira’s brother-in-law inherited a lot, construction began on the project—called the “Winner’s Cabin”—in November 2021, and the home was built by July 2022.
Welcome to the Winner’s Cabin
Located in nature-blessed Lobo, Batangas, the Winner’s Cabin features an outdoor area with a swimming pool and lounge chairs, as well as tons of greenery. There’s also a rattan swing where Zaira’s parents enjoy morning cups of coffee while admiring the view. At sunset, it’s the perfect chillout area to go stargazing.
Made with the family in mind
Inside the Winner’s Cabin, guests are greeted by a lounge area filled with an assortment of rattan chairs, adding to the place’s laidback tropical vibe. Wooden shelves and doors create a welcome contrast against the interior’s fresh white walls and overall muted colors.“‘Pagka-ayaw na po namin ng outdoor activities, puwede po kami dito, mga indoor activities like nagke-kuwentuhan, nanonood ng movies, and then yung mga bata nanonood ng cartoons,” says Zaira.
“And then ang concept po nito is open space so kasama na po niya yung kitchen namin,” she adds. The kitchen is complete with daily cooking essentials, such as a refrigerator, induction stove, microwave, and a range hood to absorb unwanted smells. An island countertop, meanwhile, makes for a perfect bonding area for intimate gatherings.
A shared bathroom connects the living and kitchen area of the cabin to the bedrooms, featuring a hotel-like aesthetic. Guests can conveniently do their laundry using the available washing machine.
Minimalist interiors and smart storage solutions
There are two bedrooms at the Winner’s Cabin: the kids’ room and the master’s bedroom. To maximize the space of the kids’ room, the homeowners had a customized bunk bed built, which has two beds, a pullout bed, and hidden storage areas inside the steps leading to the top bunk.
The master’s bedroom makes up for its small size with its simple Japanese-inspired design and fantastic vista, as guests get to breathe in fresh air and wake up to a view of the pool overlooking the mountains. The bed was also customized to create extra storage space.
Future eco-friendly and sustainable retirement home
All in all, the Winner’s Cabin lot measures 150 square meters and the floor area measures 40 square meters. Concrete was used for its durability, while synthetic rattan and marine wood make up the furniture. Because Zaira’s brother-in-law received the lot for free, they only spent for the construction, furniture, and appliances, which cost them P3 million.
“Future plans nila is retirement home talaga nila kasi residing sila sa ibang bansa,” Zaira explains. “Also, kasi engineer yung brother-in-law ko, naiisip niyang gawin ‘tong eco-friendly na sustainable house. Magpapaglagay sila dito ng solar so mas maganda na yung pasok ng kuryente, mas tipid, ‘saka eco-friendly na din.”
