Korean Actor Wi Ha Joon made huge waves upon the global success of his Netflix series Squid Game, where he portrayed the role of a police officer named Hwang Jun-ho. Though he might be a familiar face to others, having been cast in supporting roles in dramas such as Something in the Rain, Romance Is a Bonus Book or 18 Again, it wasn’t until his role on the Netflix Original that people worldwide truly started paying attention. Here are 10 things you need to know about Wi Ha Joon:
1. He’s a Leo.
Ha Joon was born on August 5, 1991 in Wando County, located in the country’s South Jeolla Province. He was raised in his family’s abalone farm on the island.
2. Wi Ha Joon isn’t his real name.
Contrary to what most people know, Ha Joon is actually his screen name. His birth name is Wi Hyun Yi and he only developed the name we know him by now once he started acting. The reason for this is because when he entered the industry, his last name, ‘Wi’, wasn't a common name in Korea, nor does his name have a “favorable meaning, ” according to his former agency.
3. He’s really athletic.
In an interview with Men’s Health Korea, the actor expressed that after enlisting in the military, he has developed a habit of going to the gym five days a week. Other than his need to stay in shape, he manages to maintain his active lifestyle through sports such as acrobatics and volleyball. He’s also a fan of mixed martial arts, which urged him to join the cast of his 2021 film Shark: The Beginning.
4. He’s a light drinker.
The actor shares that he isn’t too fond of drinking alcoholic beverages. When asked about it in an interview with Studio Lulu Lala, he revealed when it comes to the famous soju drink, he can only consume one and a half, or two bottles of it at most. He also added that if he does have to drink, he'd prefer wine.
5. He's a good dancer.
In an interview with Netflix, Ha Joon revealed that he was once a member of a dance club from middle school through high school. When he came to Seoul, his initial dream was to become a dancer, but he eventually landed roles as an actor.
6. He is managed by MSTeam Entertainment
The actor signed with South Korean Agency MSTeam Entertainment in September 2021. Other actors managed by the agency are Lee Cho Hee, Ko Sun Hee, Rhee Min Jung and Hallyu star Son Ye Jin, whom he has previously worked with on JTBC’s Something in the Rain.
7. He's worked with Kim Go Eun and Park Bo Gum
In 2015, Ha Joon found himself cast in a supporting role for the movie Coin Locker Girl. Here, he played the role of a younger Woo-gon, as mainly portrayed by actor Uhm Tae Goo. In this project, he worked alongside his talented peers Kim Go Eun and Park Bo Gum. Though both actors have already gained significant recognition in the past few years, it’s great to see the spotlight shining on Ha Joon this time around.
8. He’s on Instagram

9. He is good friends with fellow actor Lee Jong Suk.
While filming Romance is A Bonus Book in 2017, Ha Joon developed a close friendship with Lee Jong Suk on set, which was spurred on by their characters’ “bromance.” In a past interview, the actor mentioned they were both comfortable with each other, which made the whole filming process a lot more enjoyable for them.
Ha Joon and Jong Suk maintained their friendship even after wrapping up their show. Case in point: In a recent Instagram post, Ha Joon can be seen standing in front of a coffee truck sent to him by Jong Suk in support of his latest drama. Too cute!
10. He’s a doting uncle.
Ha Joon has an older sister and through her, he became an uncle to his adorable niece. He often shares pictures and videos of himself spending time and doting over the cute little girl, as seen on his Instagram page.
