If you kept up with the recently concluded 57th Baeksang Arts Awards then chances are you’re at least already familiar with the JTBC series Beyond Evil. After all, it’s the TV show with the most number of wins for the night, taking home a total of three awards: Best Actor, Best Screenplay and, of course, Best Drama. A psychological mystery thriller, the show not only persistently kept up with high viewership ratings during its run, but it also constantly kept its audience at the edge of their seats.
Now, if the fact that it’s an excitingly riveting and critically acclaimed drama isn’t enough to convince you to give the series a shot, we say never say never.
Below we list down five reasons why should definitely watch "Beyond Evil."
1. It’s perfect for binge-watching
First off, let’s talk plot. Set in the quiet town of Manyang, the locale is unexpectedly shaken to their core when several of their women disappear, and are presumed to have been killed, with the mystery culprit leaving only their fingertips behind. The gruesome crime particularly ruins the life of Lee Dong-sik, an accomplished detective who’s accused of the heinous murders after his popular twin sister goes missing. Though eventually deemed innocent, the rumors continue to follow Dong-sik 20 years later as the people of Manyang still suspect him. Now demoted to perform menial tasks, he teams up with Han Joo-won, a younger elite detective, when a new batch of murders start again. The added catch? They come with a pattern reminiscent of the cases from 20 years ago.
We don’t know about you but the thrill of unmasking the real killer is enough to get us streaming. And with each exciting episode compelling you to quickly move on to the next, you’ll find yourself consuming all of the show’s 16 installments in no time! Sounds like the perfect candidate for your next binge-watching session, right?
2. It has a charismatic ensemble cast
At the heart of the show are its two main leads, Yeo Jin Goo and Baeksang Arts Awards Best TV Actor Shin Ha Kyun. In a word, their dynamic is simply electric. Meant to trust each other despite the secrets they each harbor, the tense push and pull between Dong-sik and Joo-won is a suspenseful roller coaster ride in and of itself. Add in the show’s band of intriguing characters and you’ve got yourself a cast you can surely invest your time on.
Considering each of them—from the police officers of Manyang, to the suspicious townspeople—are built with their own nuanced personalities and backstories, it’s safe to say that there’s a lot more to Beyond Evil than just its mystery. Yeo Jin Goo explained it best in an interview, stating: “The story doesn't solely revolve around who the killer is. I liked how the writer, Kim Su-jin, combined different genres together. Finding the perpetrator is important, but the relationships between the characters and towns people are also delicately woven into the story."
Joining Ha Kyun and Jin Goo in the cast are Choi Sung Eun, Choi Jin Ho, Gil Hae Yeon, Heo Sung Tae, Choi Dae Hoon, Kim Shin Rok, Chun Ho Jin, and Nam Yoon Su, among others.
3. It’s helmed by two talented women
While Beyond Evil may be composed of a male dominated cast, don’t be fooled because it’s actually helmed by two equally talented women. At the director’s seat is Shim Na Yeon, who also recently led the 2019 coming-of-age drama Moment at 18. A testament to her skills, she was nominated for Best Director at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards thanks to her work on Beyond Evil. Alongside her is Kim Su Jin who penned the script for the show. Her masterful writing for Beyond Evil earned her the Best Screenplay Award at the Baeksang Arts Awards.
4. Lee Do Hyun makes a special appearance.
That's right, ladies and gents, our ultimate crush Lee Do Hyun makes a guest appearance in the show as Shin Ha Kyun's younger self from 20 years ago. Spoiler alert: The 18 Again actor looks just as dreamy as ever in the still below.
