If it hasn’t piqued your curiosity yet, film has been the photography trend to try these past few years. And for those who’ve tried it, you’ll know that there’s truly something special about capturing moments behind the lenses of a film camera. Each photo comes out with an undeniably beautiful and nostalgic effect that matches with today’s retro obsession.
However, loving film photography means that you also have to be very patient. Remember, this is nothing digital, and you don’t get to see the outcome of your shots right away. You first have to go to a local shop that scans and processes all those rolls for you. But, at a time like this, many of us no longer have the luxury to go out and do that.
If you’re like us and you’re itching to see what your film photos look like, we stumbled upon an online store that offers quality and affordable film photography services. So if you’ve got film cameras sitting idly on your desks, this is your chance!
Launched by film enthusiasts, Luigi Manalang and Angel Calilung, Film Avenue MNL caters to fellow film lovers and newcomers through its scanning and processing services. In an exclusive interview with Preview, they told us that this idea initially started off as a joke. But after educating themselves more about the craft, it was ultimately their passion that drove them to open their small business last March 2020.
Currently, their main service is developing 35mm color negative film (C-41) either as a package or individual service. Although they don’t print photos, they do offer add-ons that include push processing, scanning with borders, half-frame scanning, and more! Even better, the owners guarantee that they follow strict safety protocols throughout the whole scanning process. When picking up cameras, their riders make sure to wear a mask and frequently sanitize their hands. They too, quarantine and disinfect packages received and sent out before they go on to do their work. Apart from those, Luigi and Angel routinely take the time to clean and sanitize their workspaces. Isn’t that great?
But to those who want a headstart on their film photography journey, Luigi and Angel have some tips and camera recommendations for you.
1. "Invest in a good camera first."
"If you’ve tried looking, you’ll often hear the Canon AE-1, Pentax K1000 and Minolta SRT-101 as good beginner SLR cameras but there also plenty of other excellent choices out there.”
2. Assess how you'll use the camera.
"Consider such as to what kind of photos you want to take or the subject you’re interested in taking as these relate to what kind of camera you should get."
3. Mind your budget.
Are you a casual film photography enthusiast or are you looking to deepen your knowledge in the carft? Match "how invested you want to be in film photography, and your budget range."
"It might seem very overwhelming at first but if you take the time to watch Youtube videos and search online, you should have a better understanding of what you’re looking for.”
Now if you’re ready to get your film rolls developed, make sure to check out their Instagram page for prices and more details. Also, you better stay tuned as they’ve been working on including B&W film in their services which will be launched very soon!
