From Anya Taylor-Joy to Blackpink’s Jennie Kim, more and more celebrities have been raving about crystals. Aside from being eye-catching accessories for your home and your OOTD—as spotted on Nadine Lustre and Sarah Lahbati’s IGs respectively—these rocks have gained popularity in recent years as an alternative healing method, much like essential oils. With the uncertainty of current times, we’ve seen Heart Evangelista use it to “fill my home with good energy." Even our favorite Gen Z multi-hyphenate Andrea Brillantes has revealed that crystals were one of the things she got into this pandemic.
What are crystals and how do they work?
In our chat with Daryll Barte of 5D Healing Crystals, he describes crystals as healing tools formed naturally over years of special circumstances (ie: extreme temperatures). The crystals’ unique molecular composition then grants them their specific energies. “Every crystal vibrates to a specific frequency: love, healing, abundance, protection, happiness, etc,” he shares.
Whereas our vibes, as reflected in our moods, are fluid, crystals’ frequencies are constant. In the words of leading crystal expert Judy Hall, “crystal energy is perfect” in the sense that its energy pattern is stable and unchanging. In more technical applications, this is seen in the incorporation of crystals, such as quartz, in gadgets to stabilize and safely emit power and radio frequencies.
Personally using crystals for more than decorative reasons rests on the premise that everything is energy, including us. This follows the scientific logic that all matter is made of atoms, and all atoms are, at its core, energy.
How can you use crystals and how can it help?
Traditional eastern wisdom dictates that crystals work with a certain aspect of our self through the chakra, or energy center, its color represents. For example, rose quartz, with its dainty pink hues, is believed to be a heart chakra stone that amplifies universal love. Whether you’re working on self-love or manifesting your ideal relationship, this is a crystal that is good to have around.
Isabel San Diego of Curious Cat PH reiterates “it’s not the crystal, but the crystal’s energy that influences you.” Since crystals emit a constant energy, and our energies are fluid, the energy of the rock can alleviate ours. “The energy merges. If there’s any imbalance, it will balance the energies,” Daryll adds.
If all this sounds too abstract for you, Isabel offers a very simple yet compelling example when she likened crystals to friends. “You know how when you’re in a room with a positive friend, you get influenced by this person’s energy [and] you come home feeling positive as well? But if you’re in a bad mood, or not really in the mood to entertain your friend, no matter how positive your friend is, you won’t get positive.” Having one on hand will not automatically change your life; you have to let it, as change will ultimately begin with you.
Both Daryll and Isabel recommend using crystal bracelets as it puts you in direct contact with the stones’ energies. If it doesn’t match your OOTD, you can always place a crystal in your work and living spaces to enjoy its benefits.
Crystals, through their healing properties or aesthetic, have the ability to raise our spirits. Whether you believe in the spiritual properties or not, we can all agree being surrounded by beauty can uplift one’s mood. And nowadays, we will gladly take all the good vibes that we can.
