Talk to a fashion girl about turning 18 and the first thing she’ll probably share with you is the dress she wore to her debut, the party, her escort, and all the other fond memories from that special night. To many, turning 18 means finally being able to drive, being “legal” enough to drink, and actually having a say as to who the next president should be. But exciting as it is to the majority, the fact remains that it’s not all rainbows and butterflies for everyone. For a select few, the reality is that turning 18 means it’s time to be an adult—that phase in life many don’t experience until they are well in their 30s.
Coming of Age by Summit Books is a well-curated collection of 18 poems and short stories about turning, well, 18. With entries by celebrities like Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Lauren Young, to Town and Country’s EIC Yvette Fernandez, and even Cosmo.ph’s Jillian Gatcheco and her husband Chris Cantada; this book is a collection of stories from 18 different voices, all with different takes on what it really means to grow up.
It’s an easy read, but be forewarned that it can get dark and heavy, so don’t read it in one sitting. We can promise though, that if want to laugh, fall in love, and cry at the same time, this is something you should pick up along with Preview’s Anniversary Issue.
