Aika Robredo tied the knot with Jim Guzman on December 29, 2025. The ceremony was special for several reasons, and one of them was undeniably her heartfelt—and stylish—tribute to her late father, former Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo.

The proud mother of the bride, Mayor Leni Robredo, was quick to share a photo of the newlyweds. In the caption, she wrote, “Aika’s wedding gown was lovingly crafted from her Papa’s old barongs, making sure he was honored and cherished on such an important milestone.”

Preview spoke with Jo Rubio, the fashion designer behind the dress, to know more about the collaboration, process, and design.

Jo Rubio on Creating Aika Robredo’s “Dream Wedding Dress”

“Aika wanted understated elegance: clean lines, thoughtful construction, and a gown that felt immensely personal rather than ornamental,” Jo tells Preview. With this, she entrusted him with three of her father’s barongs that were “entirely different in pattern, fabric, and design.” Jo studied them carefully, as if he was “solving a puzzle without knowing the final image.” The challenge was to create a deliberately simple gown that allowed the intricacy of the piña to shine, and that was certainly accomplished.

Jo shared that he applied a similar concept before for former Mayor Honey Lacuna, wherein her father’s barongs were repurposed into a modern terno, making heritage and contemporary design meet. Aika’s wedding coordinator, Ernest Pascual, and her photographer, Charisse Tinio, introduced Jo’s work to her, and that was the specific creation that sparked her curiosity and interest to work with the designer.

The bride graciously introduced Jo to her mother, too. Mayor Leni also entrusted him to create her dress for the special occasion, and he incorporated her husband’s old barong as well.

“This was my very first collaboration with Aika, and from the very beginning, it felt deeply meaningful,” Jo shared, saying it was truly an honor to have created her “dream wedding dress” that mirrored both her vision and her essence. The idea to honor Aika’s father through her dress came naturally for both of them.

Jo added that the pieces of the barongs were handled with utmost care and entirely hand-sewn. More than a sartorial statement, the piña tapestry was a love letter and tender tribute to “a man remembered for his service, integrity, and quiet strength.” It embodied the ways in which fashion is also a medium of storytelling. As the designer put it, “This gown was not just worn. It was felt.”
