It was too hard to name just one out of everything we loved from the first run of 9 Works Theatrical and Globe Telecom's presentation of the Tony Award-winning musical, American Idiot. To say that it was good is an understatement. Trust us, you don't have to be a solid rock fan or a theater savant to enjoy it.
American Idiot is a sung-through stage adaptation of the Grammy-winning, multi-platinum punk rock album of the same name. Penned by Michael Mayer and Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, it chronicles the journey of three friends in a post-9/11 America (okay, so it gets a little political, but you'll be too busy rocking out to the performances to even notice). The production numbers are sure to set any Green Day fan ecstatic and proud, playing hits like American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and Wake Me Up When September Ends. Think raw, teen angst, and grunge youth.
Robbie Guevara is directing the local reprisal of the musical, which actually casts theater and rock vets. Playing the three friends are Jason Fernandez as Johnny, Chicosci's lead singer Miggy Chavez (who we think fits the role of Will perfectly), Nel Gomez as Tunny, and lastly, local rock icon Basti Artadi of Wolfgang as St. Jimmy. Held at the Globe Iconic Store, a dynamic open amphitheater, the production is made intimate despite the raunchy, fast-paced performances, garnering loud cheers and favor from the crowd after every number. You can also expect Yanah Laurel to give a jaw-dropping performance as Whatsername (so punny!) and to hit crazy notes! And have we mentioned how the choreography complemented their musical, too? "Talented" may not be enough to describe these performers. The lyrics of the songs are also spot on, like #feels bullets being shot right through the heart. Props to the brilliant director and the rest of the crew!
Now, sitting at the back row might seem like a bummer for some, but it is actually an opportunity to observe and appreciate the entire production—from the stage design, to the visual supports, and stunning costumes. Needless to say, #Globe9WTAmericanIdiot showcases some of the best that Filipino theater can offer, with a powerful, poignant ending you've got to see.
American Idiot premieres tonight, June 24, 8pm, at the Globe Iconic Store, Bonifacio High Street Amphitheater, BGC and will run for three consecutive weekends: June 25, 26, July 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10. For ticket inquiries, visit ticketworld.com.ph or globe.com.ph/american-idiot.
