We Tried Instagram's New Focus Feature and Here's What We Found Out See the difference!

As I opened Instagram this morning, I was greeted by a new IG Story feature—one that seems familiar to me already. Apparently, the app has rolled out an update similar to the new iPhone's Portait mode feature found in its camera app. So, as any self-proclaimed selfie queen would do, I tried it out myself.

I slid to the Focus feature option and took a quick selfie. I discovered that it blurs the background while keeping the nearest subject sharp, an attempt to give the user a stylized and more professional-looking photo.

Personally, the effect seems more like a Gaussian blur rather than a shallow depth of field or bokeh effect. Instagram's Focus mode also slightly blurs out the subject's silhouette, creating a hazy halo around the user.

The Focus feature can be accessed whether you're using your front or back camera and also works in video. It will, however, refuse to function if it does not detect a face, like when the subject is too far away from the camera. Which means, we won't be able to utilize the feature for OOTD shots.

The feature rolls out globally today on iPhone 6s, 6s+, 7, 7+, 8, 8+ and X, and on select Android devices.
