Plus why it's called "Halabira."

With less than a week away before the Miss Universe 2020 pageant night, the Philippines’ very own Rabiya Mateo is working hard to master her signature strut, the Halabira walk. Catch a sneak peek of the beauty queen’s fierce pasarela here:

Miss Universe Philippines (MUP) is documenting her preparations for the competition through a three-part series called Following Rabiya. In one of the episodes, the beauty queen from Iloilo talks about the importance of conveying power through her trademark pasarela

She goes on to explain that MUP Creative Director Jonas Gaffud is coaching her to walk with this confident aura. With this, Rabiya is training her hips and legs to improve her core strength for the walk. By doing so, she gets to isolate the movements of her shoulders and feet, drawing more focus on her swaying hips.

So why did Rabiya name her walk "Halabira"? In a previous interview, the morena beauty shares that Twitter fans originally wanted to name it as "Festive walk" but she prefers that it be called "Halabira," in honor of Ilonggos.

"Halabira" is a term derived from Aklanon term “Hala Bira Iloilo.” Usually shouted during the Ati-Atihan dance of the Dinagyang Festival, the phrase means to “dispense of all things in order to share what you have.” Given her past efforts to help medical frontliners and teach physical therapy, we’re happy to learn that her walk’s name matches her personal advocacies!

Historically, Miss Universe candidates from the Philippines are known to have their own trademark walks. Prior to Rabiya’s Halabira walk, the Phoenix Walk of Miss Universe-Philippines 2019 Gazini Ganados stole the limelight. And before that, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray also named her signature Lava Walk after a famous volcano in her birthplace.
