It's no secret that the global tourism industry has suffered greatly because of the pandemic. Apparently, even South Korea—once a bustling hotspot for tourists who love all things K-beauty, K-drama, and K-pop—is not immune to COVID-19's wrath.
Making rounds on the internet today is a now-viral post by a Facebook page named Koreathai, a travel website that offers tour packages for South Korea. "Myeongdong Today (Mar 5, 2021)," its caption says. As of writing, the post has already garnered over 3.9K shares, 1.8K reactions, and 1.5K comments.
The aforementioned FB post features a set of black-and-white photographs showing the empty streets of Myeongdong, one of the most popular destinations in Seoul that used to be flocked by tourists for its bevy of fashion and beauty stores, restaurants, and cafes. It's a shopping haven, especially for fans of K-beauty! But as seen on the somber images, gone is the Land of the Morning Calm's prime shopping district, which now looks more like a ghost town with several of its closed stores marked with a red X. If you've been to Myeongdong before, the places captured in each photograph would surely feel familiar yet also strangely unrecognizable at the same time.
