Hakuba, Japan, is a globally renowned destination known for its high-quality snow, breathtaking mountain scenery, and wide range of winter activities. The village—located in Nagano Prefecture—also hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics.

Lisa’s chalet of choice is listed on Airbnb as the Hygge Chalet. According to Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hygge is about “taking time away from the daily rush to be together with people you care about—or even by yourself—to relax and enjoy life’s quieter pleasures.” This is what the Japanese home aims to embody.

A winner of the Japan Log House Association Excellence Award, the Hygge Chalet offers everything needed for a relaxing stay. The house exudes comfort, from its natural materials to its furniture and features. A wood-burning stove keeps guests warm in the spacious living room, which also features an open atrium with sweeping views of the surrounding outdoors.

Apart from the crackling sound of flames, warm lighting floods the space, enhancing the sense of coziness amid the cold. A few steps lead to the dining area and kitchen, which house colorful yet functional kitchenware.

Inside the chalet are three bedrooms—one with two double beds and two with three single beds each. All remain in keeping with the cottage’s wooden fixtures and are surrounded by greenery, which can also be seen from the balcony. With room-darkening shades and heating available, the cold won’t interfere with the comfort of the home.
