Job hunting can easily become frustrating, especially for first timers. To some degree, it’s true that first impressions do last, even in the corporate world. And if you’re looking to wow recruiters and make it to the "yes pile" quick, your resumé is one of the first things you should look at. It's literally the first thing they see from you so it's only natural to want to make it the best out of the sea of applicants. With that said, here are a few hacks to nail that resumé, a.k.a. your golden ticket to that dream job.  

1. When it comes to layout, less is more

It’s safe to assume that recruiters review several resumés on a daily basis; that often, assessing candidates with overly flashy, textbox-heavy resumés aren’t that helpful. As a general rule, it’s best to keep the layout simple, taking into consideration the ample spacing, even margins, and uniformity of text fonts and sizes. Best to keep the format low key and let your qualifications do all the talking.

2. Keep it concise and concrete

Resumé’s that include graphs and pie charts to show level of competency in certain areas are a pet peeve of recruiters, to say the least. Skip them and make yours concrete by including contributions, scope of work, or any related achievements that would bump up your chances of getting noticed. Also, there are no hard rules when it comes to number of pages (the one-page rule isn’t always true) so just keep your eyes fixed on polishing the content. If you’re on the creative side, it makes sense for you to show off your designing skills but don’t forget to save it in the right format (in this case, .PDF) to make sure everything’s in order.

3. Customize your resumé according to the requirements

Another way to spark interest is to lift the language of the requirements or job description on to your resumé. But this also doesn’t mean copying and pasting every single word and jargon. Be smart about reflecting the requirements of the role by highlighting those experiences or qualifications you’re confident enough to bring to the table.

4. Photos are not required

Generally speaking, professional photos aren’t a requirement. In fact, in most countries (like the US) including photos isn’t advised at all because it’s believed to affect a recruiter’s judgment. Since putting pictures in a resumé is a common practice in the Philippines, if you decide to have one, make sure you’re wearing proper business attire.

5. Provide updated contact information

This might sound like a no-brainer, but, make sure that the contact information you indicate on your resumé are all active. Keep in mind that recruiters will not have any other means of contacting you besides what you provide them with. Should the company ask for references (this doesn’t come early on in the process but just in case, it’s good to have this on hand), make sure you give these individuals a heads-up that they might be contacted.
