While Japan's sakura displays are undoubtedly beautiful, you'll have to save more money if you want to visit the cherry blossom capital of the world. And if your next guess is Washington, D.C., again, you're mistaken.

The official titleholder of the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World is Macon, Georgia in the United States. Home to 350,000 cherry trees, the city holds its annual International Cherry Blossom Festival. In comparison, Washington D.C. only has around 3,800 cherry trees.

It all started in 1949, when realtor William Fickling discovered the first Yoshino cherry tree in his backyard. Now, Macon celebrates with rides and blossom-themed events every time the city turns pink. And the Fickling Family Foundation donates more trees every year!
