There's no denying that South Korea's film industry is on a roll: Bong Joon Ho's Parasite very famously bagged the big awards at the 2020 Oscars and K-dramas aren't letting up as an almost-peerless international phenomenon. Oh, and remember how the first chapter of Train to Busan was received with immense international fanfare back in 2016? Well, director Yeon Sang Ho is back with Train to Busan 2: Peninsula, and the trailer is nothing short of heart-stopping.
The first installment starred seasoned actor Gong Yoo and followed a group of surviving passengers aboard a train to Busan, hellbent on going through the most insane, zombie-ridden situations to stay alive.
The second film is set four years after the first one, in a despairing, apocalyptic world. The words "nothing is left" flash across the screen. But, like in the Will Smith film I Am Legend, there is a lone survivor—a gun-wielding soldier named Jung-Seok who, in between close calls with the undead, meets other survivors along the way. But these survivors don't seem to mean well. Crowded together in a warehouse-turned-ampitheater, they're seen releasing other survivors to zombies in what appears to be a gladiatorial match.
Needless to say, this is a time when zombie films dance dangerously on the cusp of realism. But nevertheless, the trailer for the titan hit's second chapter is unapologetically exciting, and we can't wait for the release date to be announced.
