For WeTV viewers, The Kangks Show is a title they’re probably already familiar with, considering it’s been part of the Top 10 list of WeTV Philippines and abroad for the past few weeks. Rightly so, as the daring and out-of-the-box show starring Angelica Panganiban and Maris Racal proves that being sex positive is needed in a fast-progressing era.
Upon its premiere last December, the series undoubtedly made noise on various social media platforms brought about by all the meme-worthy puns in the script and the funny banter between its characters. However, aside from its humor, The Kangks Show also takes pride in how it tackles, challenges, and discusses different social issues and norms.
Intrigued? Below is a primer for the show before you press play.
Here’s everything you should know about the WeTV Original “The Kangks Show”:
It’s written and directed by Antoinette Jadaone.
Antoinette Jadaone and Angelica Panganiban last worked together on the 2014 film That Thing Called Tadhana, the box office hit that sent the country into a state of romantic angst for months. Shortly after, the director ventured into making more flicks such as Never Not Love You, Alone/Together, and the award-winning Fan Girl starring Charlie Dizon and Paulo Avelino.
On her reason for creating her latest project, The Kangks Show, Antoinette explained, “It’s about time that we talk about sex in a positive way. Sex is good and sex should be talked about para mawala yung stigma ng mga tao sa kinds of sex na kinalakihan natin. In simple terms, parang The Kangks Show is Maalaala Mo Kaya meets Dr. Margie Holmes meets Joe D’Mango. So it’s a show within a show. Kung sa MMK nag-se-send sila ng mga talambuhay nila, yung mga letter senders ni doc Kara may mga questions sila tungkol sa sex.”
Angelica Panganiban immediately went back to the Philippines when the project was pitched to her.
ICYDK, Angelica was on vacation in the United States when she received the news that she’ll be working again with Direk Antoinette after seven years. Without thinking twice, she decided to go back to the country just to bring this show to life.
In an interview with ABS-CBN, she said “I had to cut short my trip to Los Angeles, kasi sabi nga niya, may project na gagawin… Sabi ko, ‘Naku, Tonette, ‘pag hindi tayo natuloy, friendship over tayo, ah. Mental health ko ‘yung nakasalalay dito, ibabalik mo ako ng Pilipinas, hindi pa ako ready!’”
It’s not afraid to talk about sensitive topics.
When we say it’s a daring and brave show, we mean it. Throughout the course of the series’ eight episodes, a wide array of social issues are presented and unpacked unapologetically—and yes, it takes on more than just conversations on sex. As a matter of fact, the show also makes social commentaries on "cancel culture" in social media, Gen-Z stereotypes, identity crisis, alter personas, and a lot more.
The show lets its ensemble cast shine.
Doc Kara Teo (played by Angelica) hosts the titular “The Kangks Show”. As mentioned, her program revolves around giving advice to letter senders dealing with a diverse range of concerns regarding their sex life. Each letter is accompanied by a reenactment from the senders themselves, which makes for really interesting scenarios! However, as her show starts losing its viewers to a social media personality named Cassandra (played by Maris Racal), Doc Kara leans towards different gimmicks in order to win her audience back.
Don’t be fooled though, because the series doesn’t just limit itself to Doc Kara and her show’s storyline, but it also delves into the lives of her loved ones and acquaintances, zeroing in on the personal problems they each have to confront. With this, it’s safe to say that The Kangks Show is indeed a roller coaster ride with an ensemble cast that’s given ample screen time and various chances to shine on their own.
The Kangks Show stars Angelica Panganiban, Maris Racal, Kit Thompson, JC De Vera, and Awra Briguela. It premiered last December 17, 2021 and ended on January 21, 2022. The final episode is currently available for WeTV’s VIP users. Non-VIP users can start streaming the last episode this January 28.
