It’s time to make the switch from coffee to tea. Tea drinkers allegedly have healthier brains compared to non-tea drinkers, a new study from the National University of Singapore finds. This discovery is also associated with tea drinkers possessing more organized brain regions after doctors from the university’s Department of Psychological Medicine examined the neuroimaging data of 36 adults.
"Our results offer the first evidence of positive contribution of tea drinking to brain structure, and suggest that drinking tea regularly has a protective effect against age-related decline in brain organization," says assistant professor Feng Lei.
The participants in the study were aged 60 and above and had undergone neuropsychological tests and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The study was conducted from 2015 to 2018.
The group discovered that the participants who drank green tea, oolong tea, or black tea at least four times a week for around 25 years had brain regions that were more organized and interconnected. This supports the team’s previous finding that tea drinkers had better cognitive functions.
Other neurological benefits found in tea drinking includes its caffeine content, which is known to boost alertness and attention. It also boasts of a unique amino acid called L-Theanine, which when paired together with caffeine, gives its consumer both concentration and focus.
