The inspiration for the lush, 18-hectare Sunlight Eco Tourism Island Resort started from something—or rather someone—fairly small: a 10-year-old girl with an incredible ambition to create paradise. The young girl’s dream soon became her father’s goal—and eventually, an achievement. At the time of the island resort’s founding, Coron was still in its emergence as a tourist staple for the Western market. The father took a chance at pursuing the island resort, which was later proven to be a worthy investment as it became one of Palawan’s best resorts.

Sunlight Eco Tourism Island Resort is located in Naglayaran Island, Northern Palawan, half an hour away from the town proper of Coron. This privately-owned haven lies in the deep blue waters of Culion, Calamianes group of islands in Northern Palawan. The island resort predictably prides itself in its high regard for eco-tourism. With an abundance of coral reefs and rich marine diversity found all around the area, the founder made it his company’s responsibility to safeguard these natural treasures and encourage their guests to do the same. Ryna Brito, Vice President of Unitop International Group of Companies, explains that the island resort makes this possible through simple means to promote environmentalism within their vicinity and among their constituents.

“We use paper straws, discourage our guests to step on the corals, amongst many other ways that we use to preserve the marine life surrounding the island.” Ryna adds, “Although sustainability is a constant development, we also aim to be at least 90% sustainable at one point.”

With rooms priced at an average of P15,000 to P35,000 per night, Sunlight Eco Tourism Island Resort guarantees an experience worth every buck. It has a total of 99 villas, all of which stand on stilts a la the Maldives’ floating cottages. For the most luxurious retreat, you can opt to book a water villa that features glass floors.

The island resort offers private tours to some of the best local tourist spots near their area, such as the Twin Lagoon, Kayangan Lake, Malcapuya Island, Sunken Japanese Wrecks, and the Culion Town Proper. “Without experiencing these unique and wonderful spots, your travel to Coron wouldn’t be complete,” Kim noted.

It also boasts of expansive hills, white-sand beaches, and gardens—exactly what one would look for in a private getaway from the city. They have a wide array of activities that suit even the most discerning of guests: a spa for those who crave relaxation, playground for the kids, KTV rooms for some good fun, a gym for fitness buffs who wouldn’t miss a day of workout, restaurants and bars, a dive shop, and a gorgeous infinity pool that everyone will love. The island resort also offers water activities like jetski, kayak, hydrobob, aqua jet, glass bottom kayaks, and a lot more. “We always look for ways to develop the island and offer a 360-degree island resort experience,” Ryna promises, revealing the forthcoming facilities that guests can look forward to—a driving range, shooting range, butterfly sanctuary, and a private organic farm.
