The film has been delayed for over a year due to the pandemic.

Song Joong Ki fans can hardly catch a break with all the upcoming thrillers and dramas the actor has going on. Not that we’re complaining! After the recent action-packed 2020 Netflix movie, Space Sweepers, and the mafia drama Vincenzo, our favorite hallyu star is set to grace the silver screen once again in a promising crime thriller titled Bogota. Although the film is still in the middle of production, we can’t help but get excited, nonetheless, and if you love Joong Ki just as much as we do, we’re sure you are, too! For this reason, we’ve rounded up a few things you need to know about this potential blockbuster.

Check them out below!

The story will take place in South America.

Similar to Vincenzo, we’ll once again find Joong Ki overseas. This crime thriller revolves around two young men who leave their country, South Korea, and set off to migrate to Colombia in the 1990s. They eventually settle in a traditional market in the heart and capital of the country, Bogota. Hence, the name of the movie.

It’s got a star-studded and diverse cast.

Co-starring alongside Joong Ki is actor Lee Hee Joon who’s set to play a character named Soo-Yeong in the film. FYI, Hee Joon is currently creating a buzz with the tvN suspense thriller Mouse. In case you didn’t know, he also briefly appeared on Vincenzo for a special cameo role.

Set to join these big names stars to round out the main cast are Jo Hyun Chul, who’s best known for his role in Hotel De Luna, and 29-year-old Colombian actress Juana Del Rio. A little background on her: Before diving into film and TV, the actress started out in theater. Thanks to her success in the field, she caught the eye of network producers who eventually casted her for more onscreen roles. If you’re curious to see Juana in action, you can find her previous projects on Netflix: Frontera Verde (2019) and All For Love (2020.)

It’s led by an award-winning director.

Helming the film is Kim Sung Je, a director and screenwriter best known for his work on the award-winning movie Minority Opinion, internationally known as The Unfair. He earned multiple nominations for his directing and writing work on the film, where he won two Best Screenplay Awards at the 24th Buil Film Awards and the 36th Blue Dragon Film Awards. He also received a nod for Best New Director at the 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards. Impressed yet? 'Cause we certainly are!

The cast and crew went through A LOT of rough patches when they started production.

In early June 2020, the cast and crew flew to Colombia with hopes of shooting 90% of the film in the country. However, come March, they had to halt activities due to the rise in COVID cases worldwide. Having only completed 40% of filming, rumors about Bogota being discontinued spread last May 2020. The production team was quick to deny this, of course, and stated that they would resume shooting in Korea in 2021.

More than a year later, media outlet OSEN reported that the Bogota team has already planned on flying back to Colombia in July of this year to continue filming. Another article by Sports Chosun added that only select staff members will be sent to the country while the actors will film locally from May to June. Special effects will be incorporated instead to make it look like the characters are in Bogota, much like the CGI-magic used for Vincenzo.

That said, a source from the film clarified that the production team has yet to settle on concrete plans with regards to filming. “Plans to resume filming in July have not been set yet,” read their statement in Soompi. “The production team is internally reviewing the possibilities. There are too many variables currently. Nothing has been confirmed concretely.”

Meanwhile, Joong Ki and Hee Joon’s agencies also commented that they haven’t been informed of a filming schedule yet, leaving the film’s release date uncertain. Finger’s crossed things look up for the team soon!
