Siargao, in the last few years, has transformed from being a secret paradise and into a destination that's on practically everyone's bucket list. Bars open until late, surf spots are crowded, and the island life isn't as idyllic anymore. But Punta Punta Surf Retreat is one of those resorts on the island that is far from the chaos of the surf town of General Luna, but still close enough that you're just a quick boat or scooter ride from a quick surf sesh at Cloud 9 at dawn. "Besides a few roosters and crashing waves at sunset, it's perfectly quiet and serene. It's like having a piece of paradise all to yourself," resort owner Gina Harris says in an interview.

Punta Punta Surf Retreat, which opened in November 2019 in Barangay Cabitoonan, features glamping tents (P4000/night) with ceiling fans, king-sized beds, and private open-sky bathrooms. Guests get complimentary breakfast, boat transfers to and from General Luna, bath and beach towels, and eco-friendly and refillable toiletries from Paraiso Siargao. You can also book their surf villa (P13,000/night), which can house up to five people. In between surfing and island-hopping, guests can take a dip in the pool, hang out at their beach café, or enjoy the ocean breeze right in front of the resort.

"We designed our retreat with intention: we wanted to give guests the opportunity to experience the best of the island life without having to sacrifice the creature comforts of luxurious living," Gina continues. The resort's furniture, according to her, are of their own design and influenced by traditional rattan pieces. She's also proud of her team, from the chef to the surf instructors, who are onboard with their mission to preserve the "pure, natural magic" of Siargao. "Little [grommets] from the village always welcome you with smiles and high-fives, and the surf out front invites you to enjoy the simple pleasures in life," she adds.

For Punta Punta Surf Retreat, being in touch with the community is important—they are, after all, the hosts of the island. And this is what living the island life is all about.

Punta Punta Surf Retreat is in Barangay Cabitoonan, General Luna, Surigao del Norte. For more information, visit Punta Punta Surf Retreat's website.
