Amid the unprecedented outbreak, Princess Sofia of Sweden has stepped up. After completing an intensive training course, the 35-year-old royal was enlisted as a medical assistant at the Sophiahemmet Hospital, of which she is the honorary chair. An image of her in blue scrubs and white sneakers was shared on the official Instagram page of the Swedish Royal Family.
According to Princess Sofia, she will not be working directly with COVID-19 patients, as the Sophiahemmet Hospital has adjusted to chiefly tend to those afflicted with cancer. As of April 16, the hospital had no confirmed cases of the virus. "Within the framework of the 'emergency response,' I am now placed in one of the hospital's care units where, together with other newly trained colleagues, I support and relieve the care staff with various tasks, including care of patients and cleaning," she wrote in a separate Instagram post.
Pia Hultkrantz, a spokeswoman for the hospital, said that Princess Sofia and her fellow volunteers are meant to assist the medical professionals, by disinfecting equipment, completing kitchen shifts, and general cleaning.
“To have the opportunity to help in this difficult time is extremely rewarding,” Princess Sofia said.
The former glamour model-turned royal is not the only one leaping to the occasion. According to a report by People, approximately 80 people take the intensive training course, in an attempt to alleviate the pandemic's impact on Sweden. The nation currently ranks 19th on the COVID-19 watch chart, with 14,777 cases, of which there have been 1,580 deaths and 550 recoveries. As of writing, Sweden is not on lockdown, with government officials citing "herd immunity" as the motivation for this counterflowing strategy.
