Tweens of the aughties, rejoice!

Girls who grew up in the late '90s and aughties have had reason to celebrate with the revival of beloved movies, shows, and characters we loved while we were growing up: there’s Gilmore Girls, the Archie comics through Riverdale, and even Sabrina the Teenage Witch!

Now there's another series that will fuel that nostalgia: HBO has confirmed the green light on a Practical Magic prequel series, through their streaming service HBO Max! (ICYMI: HBO Max will soon be the new home of Friends!)

Let’s review: Practical Magic, based on the book by Alice Hoffman, starred a pre-Miss Congeniality Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as Sally and Gillian, respectively, playing young witches of the Owens family raised by two eccentric aunts after their parents’ death. The Owens women have a family curse: Every man they’ve ever loved has met an untimely death. That synopsis alone should be enough reason for you to re-watch the movie!

Meanwhile, the prequel—titled Rules of Magic—now focuses on those two aunts: Frances and Jet. Set in 1960s New York, the two grow up as young women different from the rest when they discover they are descended from an ancient bloodline of witches. Jessica Jones’ Melissa Rosenberg is the showrunner for the series, which means we’ve likely got a new binge-worthy show to watch out for!
