One of the '90s most beloved cartoons is getting a live action version—but don't expect it to be sugar, spice, and everything nice. According to Variety, The CW is working on an “adult” take on the Powerpuff Girls much like the network’s dark Archie comics spin Riverdale.
Reportedly, the concept of the series would revolve around the iconic trio—Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup—being "disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting." No word yet on Professor Utonium or if the show would include any of the original’s iconic cast of villains. But it sounds a little like Warner Bros. brooding version of Teen Titans will be simply called “Titans,” and will revolve around a grungy set of teenage superheroes whose crime-fighting ways are more violent than a cartoon could permit.
On Twitter, fans of the cartoon expressed their thoughts on the project. Safe to say it was welcomed with mixed reactions.
The reboot will be helmed by writers and executive producers Heather Regnier (iZombie) and Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body) and will be produced by Warner Bros. Television for The CW. Since the project is in the early stages of development, no news yet on the cast and when production will officially start for the show.
