For many engaged couples, an engagement shoot is part and parcel of the wedding preparations. With several engagement shoots making the trend online, there is that pressure to constantly outdo others with increasingly original and inventive concepts and photos! This means sourcing and booking the most elaborate and extravagant locations, even if it means flying out of the country.

For couple Isabel Gonzalo and Lester Cabucana, however, they didn’t need to look far for a creative concept. The two drew on the heritage and eclectic sights of Manila, particularly by the Philippine National Railways

According to Isabel, the concept for their engagement shoot—capturing the vintage and eclectic style of Manila—took more than a year in the making. She says, “We have had this concept in our engagement shoot for more than a year already. I thought of wearing a white wedding dress, and a suit for my fiancé partnered with white sneakers. We wanted to showcase the other side of Manila with a vintage feel. The first thing that popped in our mind was the PNR along Tutuban. We also thought of the streets of Escolta, which all we know has a rich cultural heritage.”

Manila-themed engagement shoots have been on the rise for a while now, but what we love about this particular set is the use of the PNR that resulted in an unexpectedly poignant setting. We usually take this train system for granted, but the two were able to capture a cinematic vibe with the help of ProudRad. Instead of overly styled shots and poses, the two captured a more candid feel with a play on light and shadows that resemble film stills.

For couples who want to take their lead, Isabel has a few pointers. As the shoot was done outdoors, Isabel advises to expect unpredictable weather. She adds, “Just be yourself. It is very difficult to pretend to be something that you are not. It will also reflect in the photos.” The bride-to-be also shares that it’s important to scout for the best suppliers, especially the photographers and videographers that best match your vision.
