With our busy everyday lives, we sometimes miss the chance to spend time with our loved ones, especially our grandparents. ICYDK, Grandparents' Day 2023 was celebrated last September 10, 2023. Thanks to the holiday, we were reminded to make the most out of our time with our beloved grandparents, and also to celebrate their love for us—not just on one particular day.
In case you're curious, we've listed here some of our favorite celebrities who were raised by their grandparents. Below, you can also find how they keep in touch with their lolos and lolas despite their busy schedules at work.
LOOK: Celebrities Who Were Raised by Their Grandparents
1. Marian Rivera
Raised by her maternal grandmother, Marian Rivera has learned a lot from Lola Iska. She was taught not just to be strong when it comes to reaching her dreams in life, but also how to be forgiving and compassionate.
"I could not forget what my lola told me when my parents separated. That I should not hold any grudges towards them because I will never become successful in life," Marian said.
Earlier in her career, Marian also revealed that it was her lola who gave the Kapuso Primetime Queen her blessing to be an actress. It's all thanks to lola Iska that we have Queen Marian in our lives right now.
2. Coco Martin
Before he became Tanggol or the renowned Cardo Dalisay, Coco Martin was (and still is!) a devoted grandson to his Lola Matilde. He is the typical laking-lola, you guys.
In a vlog with Isko Moreno, the Batang Quiapo star reminisced simpler times with his lola Matilde. He stayed with his grandmother after his parents' separation.
Coco narrated how his Lola Matilde had multiple rakets to survive everyday life. The premiere actor felt grateful to his grandma for all the lessons he learned from her. "Kung hindi ko pinagdaanan lahat ng ‘yun, kung nagkaroon ako ng perfect family, hindi ako ganito mag-isip at hindi ako ganito dumiskarte."
It's worth noting how Coco never forgets to spend time with her. In 2019, they went to the happiest place on Earth, Tokyo Disneyland.
3. Julia Montes
Julia Montes described her grandmother as the "constant presence" in her life. Going through numerous auditions as a former child actress, Julia and her Lola Flory did it all together.
And of course, fame and success do not come easy. It comes to those who work hard and patiently wait. For Lola Flory, it was all about sacrifice. In fact, she gave up her salon business to provide support to Julia's showbiz career.
Julia eventually became one of the most sought-after leading ladies in Philippine television but did not forget her roots. She paid back all of her grandmother's efforts by putting up a new salon for Lola Flory in 2012!
4. Maymay Entrata
The rising pop star, Maymay Entrata came from a family led by an overseas Filipino worker (OFW). With that, she was left in the love and care of her grandmother, whom she calls Mama Ludy.
Mama Ludy has been Maymay's constant companion when she entered showbiz. Now that her grandma is based in Cagayan De Oro, Maymay is one devoted apo and never forgets to check up on her lola—even celebrating her birthday despite Maymay's hectic schedule!
5. Liza Soberano
Liza Soberano spent her early childhood with her Mommy Divina and Daddy Jeff in the U.S. Liza said that it really felt like she was adopted by her grandparents, which is why she would just call them "mommy" and "daddy" instead of lola (grandma) and lolo (grandpa).
"I grew up with them, sila ‘yong nagpaaral sa akin and then parang every summer vacation and Christmas vacation ko lang dinadalaw ‘yong mommy ko in San Jose (California)," she shared in a Magandang Buhay interview.
