The Philippines has more than 7,000 beautiful islands spread out in our archipelago. So if we're talking about probabilities (read: the more entries, the more chances of winning) our country really has it in the bag for best island, best beaches, or anything ocean-related—but that doesn't dampen the honor in any way. It really doesn't come as a surprise that the Philippines has once again been hailed as Asia's Leading Beach Destination and Asia's Leading Dive Destination in the 28th World Travel Awards.
“We are elated that the country’s pristine beaches and mesmerizing dive spots have once again been cited as the best in Asia by the prestigious 2021 World Travel Awards. We share this recognition with our tourism stakeholders, local government units, partner agencies, and all Filipinos who have been helping us promote our country’s attractions, products, and culture," said Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat in a statement.
This is the fifth citation of the Philippines for the Asia's Leading Beach Destination title, which we were awarded in 2013, 2016, 2018, and 2020. It's also the third time we received the Asia's Leading Dive Destination award, after topping the list in 2019 and 2020. The Philippines was also World's Leading Dive Destination in 2019 and 2020. For the 2021 World Travel Awards, we're still in the running for these titles: World's Leading Beach Destination, World's Leading Dive Destination, World's Leading Island Destination, and World's Leading Tourist Board. These awards will be announced on November 26 at the Grand Final Gala Ceremony in Moscow, Russia.
Here are the other World Travel Awards that the Philippines has been given:
- Cebu Pacific as Asia's Leading Most Efficient Airline
- Savoy Hotel Manila as Asia's Leading Airport Hotel
- Discovery Primea as Asia's Leading Business Hotel
- City of Dreams as Asia's Leading Casino Resort and Asia's Leading Fully Integrated Resort
- Amanpulo as Asia's Leading Private Island Resort
The World Travel Awards was established in 1993 "to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries." It works through nomination and votation by "qualified executives working within travel and tourism and the consumer travel buyer."
