The Philippine General Hospital is in talks to be a referral hospital for COVID-19 cases in the NCR.

A statement from the Department of Health posted today, March 20, 2020, has revealed that the Philippine General Hospital is currently in talks to become the center for COVID-19 cases in the National Capital Region.

To accommodate this, UP-PGH has stopped admitting non-emergency cases unrelated to the pandemic. The decision is said to be finalized within the day.

"The initiative will require full support from the NCR medical community since additional health care workers will be needed to complement PGH's existing workforce," the advisory reads. "We are working hard to ensure that health workers will be protected while caring for their patients."

DOH adds that one wing with 40 beds of the Lung Center of the Philippines will also be dedicated for COVID-19 patients. The agency explains, "Because LCP is the referral hospital for patients with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis and lung cancer, care must be taken not to expose these immunocompromised patients."

Aside from PGH, it was announced that the Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital is also being prepared to be a COVID-19 referral hospital. The DOH is also encouraging more blood donations from the public to stabilize supply for severe and critical patients. The Philippine Blood Center will no longer admit suspected COVID-19 patients to ensure the safety of these donatioins.
