If you're a true Disney fan, then you definitely know Mulan down to every hilarious Mushu quote and every high-soaring note of the song Reflection. The beloved hit animation has attracted a new wave of attention 18 years after its original premiere in 1998 when leaked details of its upcoming live-action retelling caused an Internet uproar.

Rumors of a white male lead and a non-Chinese cast, among other things, have netizens earnestly using the hashtag #MakeMulanRighta movement against the possible script and its whitewashing of Asian culture.

The proposed screenplay, posted anonymously online on AngryAsianMan.com, revealed that the remake would not focus on Mulan's own journey to protect her family, but instead feature a white male sailor saving the young heroine and winning her love. Protests also revolved around how a prominent male lead would take the spotlight away from China's legendary female warrior.

In response to the issue, Disney launched a global casting call to search for a Chinese actor to play Mulan. Vulture's Kyle Buchanan also reported that a source "close to the live-action Mulan project" states "Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese." Apparently, the leaked screenplay was merely a "jumping-off point."
