2020 has undeniably been an eventful year and to say we can’t wait for it to be over would be an understatement. That said, to welcome a brand-new beginning, Pantone has officially announced not just one but two Colors of the Year for 2021.
Ladies and gents, introducing: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating.
Yup, you read that right! According to Pantone, a.k.a. the global authority for color communication and inspiration since 1963, Ultimate Gray and Illuminating represent “a marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.” And considering how glum 2020 has been, that sure sounds like something we can all use right now.
Ultimate Gray, inspired by the colors of pebbles on the beach, is “emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation.” On the other hand, Illuminating, something sunny and friendly, is "a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power.” Together, the two independent colors support each other and create an aspirational and hopeful color pairing.
2021’s Ultimate Gray and Illuminating replace 2020’s Classic Blue as Pantone’s official Color of the Year.
