Anyone remotely interested in Korean culture must have heard of Jeju Island. It's a volcanic archipelago seperated from the country's mainland, making it a hotspot for local and international tourists alike. The province has its own hustle and bustle no doubt, but it's definitely still an escape from the humdrum of city life.
This inviting quality is what makes it the ideal setting for upcoming tvN drama Our Blues. The series revolves around certain individuals who navigate with romance, heartbreak, and friendship whilst on the island. Along the way, they discover how uncannily intertwined their lives are.
The schmaltzy, slice-of-life drama can be streamed on Netflix, and we reckon it'll have you hooked at an instant. Before it does though, it's worth getting to know the faces we'll be catching every week.
Meet the Cast of "Our Blues" and Where You've Seen Them Before:
1. Lee Byung Hun
The last time we saw Lee Byung Hun on the small screen, he was the masked Front Man in 2021 global hit Squid Game. Beyond that though, the 52-year-old is best known for appearing in the action-packed G.I. Joe Hollywood movie franchise, and is a regular recipient of Best Actor awards back home in Korea.
In Our Blues, Byung Hun embodies his more docile nature as Lee Dong-seok, a homegrown salesman from Jeju Island. When a newcomer rolls into town, Dong-seok gets involved and starts to peel away at her mysterious layers.
2. Shin Min Ah
That newcomer's name is Min Sun-a, and she'll be portrayed by the well-adored Shin Min Ah. We first fell in love with the model-actress when she was the titular character in My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho. She also recently charmed audiences as Yoon Hye-jin in Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha.
Like Hye-jin, Min Ah will once again play a city girl who goes through a shift in perspective after moving to a quainter home. Locals are initially skeptical of Sun-a, but her time in the province eventually unravels a different side of her.
3. Cha Seung Won
With over 50 titles under his belt, Cha Seung Won has proven that he's Korean entertainment's resident funny guy. Films like Kick The Moon and Ghost House established him as a big screen mainstay back in the aughts, and shows such as Splendid Politics and A Korean Odyssey sustained his spot on our screens.
We'll see him play Choi Han-soo in Our Blues, a yuppie who comes home to Jeju and reunites with his first love upon returning.
4. Lee Jung Eun
There's a pretty good chance that Lee Jung Eun looks familiar to you. She did, in fact, portray Moon-gwang, the housekeeper in the historic, Oscar-winning blockbuster Parasite. Before gaining international acclaim though, she was already quite the celebrated actress. This was thanks to her appearances in fan-favorite dramas such as While You Were Sleeping, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo, and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (making Our Blues her reunion project with Min Ah).
Jung Eun will display her endearing acting chops as Jung Eun-hee, Han-soo's childhood sweetheart who remained on the island and now works as a fish vendor.
5. Uhm Jung Hwa
Adding some popstar sass to the ensemble is Uhm Jung Hwa. Her first few years in the industry saw her as a fiery performer who busted out hit after hit, making her a role model for the female artists that came after her. The 52-year-old has also had quite the illustrious career as a thespian, boasting over 30 TV and movie credits, and a Daejong Film Awards Best Actress recognition in 2o13.
Our Blues marks her return to the small screen after nearly five years. She'll be playing Go Mi-ran, one of Eun-hee's close friends who retreated to Jeju after being worn out by city life.
6. Han Ji Min
Rooftop Prince and Miss Baek's Han Ji Min graces this drama as Lee Young-ok, an island newbie who finds work as a haenyeo, or a free-diver that harvests shellfish. Ji Min first burst into the scene as an ingenue who stole the spotlight in 2005 drama Resurrection (Fun fact: in that show, she was the love interest of Uhm Tae Woong, the brother of her co-star Jung Hwa!)
Since then, she's collected quite the number of accolades, cementing her position as a formidable leading lady. She'll be showing off this prowess of hers when Young-ok gets romantically involved with a lovesick ship captain.
7. Kim Woo Bin
Yup, Shin Min Ah's off-screen partner, Kim Woo Bin, is co-starring with her in this drama. It's been quite some time since we've seen the The Heirs breakout star on screen, but his role as Park Jung-joon couldn't have been a better comeback.
A warm-hearted ship captain who's been on Jeju all his life, he aims to find someone to settle down with. This is where Young-ok comes in, as a possible apple of his eye.
