Did You Know? OPM Song "Ako’y Sa’yo, Ika’y Akin" Was Written in Less Than 30 Minutes

How long do you think it would take you to write a four-minute song? Do you think you can do it in less than 30 minutes—music and all?

IAXE’s lead vocalist, Jek Manuel said their former bass guitar player Jhon Bunda did just that when the latter wrote Ako’y Sa’yo, Ika’y Akin. “Sobrang heartbroken siya noong mga panahon na ‘yan,” he told Summit OG in an exclusive interview about the origin of the song.

Nabuo daw ‘yan over three cases of beer,” he joked. “Nagawa lang niya ‘yan ng mga less than 30 minutes. Ganoon siya kagaling magsulat.”

Jek also said Jhon can also come up with song arrangements and melodies on his guitar. “Noon tinuro niya sakin ‘yan, nagandahan ako. I fell in love with it. Kaya mabilis ko rin siyang natutunan,” he shared.

The band did not expect that the song would be a hit when they released it. “Noong narinig namin first time [sa radyo], nagtalunan talaga kami sa tuwa,” he recalled. “It’s everybody’s dream.”

Hindi ganoon kadaling pumasok o maging recording artist,” he admitted. Jek said the process was long. “Panonoorin ka sa rehearsal niyo, gagawa ka ng demo, and then after that, pupuntahan ka sa bar kung saan kayo tumutugtog.

Jek said producers back then would look for flexibility. “Titignan nila kung very flexible band kayo. Kung you can do a variety of songs, hindi lang original,” he explained.

Ako’y Sa’yo, Ika’y Akin started off with just an acoustic guitar. Jek felt something was missing. So the band decided to add the sound of a cabasa and the triangle using a keyboard. Surprisingly, it all came together really nicely and it has been played with those two sounds ever since.

It’s the sincere and raw emotion behind the song that makes it relatable and memorable. It has been revived a number of times already, with Daniel Padilla and First Circle’s versions as some of the most popular ones.

Dahil sa kanta na ‘yan, marami kaming nakasalamuhang personalidad,” Jek shared. “Sobrang thankful ako na naging IAXE man.”
