Hosting Miss Universe is no easy feat when millions of people all over the world have their eyes glued on you. Announcing the winners, however, is another thing altogether, especially after Steve Harvey’s oh-so memorable mishap in 2015. Remember when he announced Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as Miss Universe, but it turned out that Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach was actually the winner for that year? Yeah, we’re still not over it.
Things were a little different this time around though, as the beloved host and comedian stepped down from the gig for the first time in five years. Instead, Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo and TV personality Mario Lopez took the hosting reins for Miss Universe 2020, and let’s just say the internet had a lot to say about their performance. They weren’t spared from the yearly internet memes generated by the competition either.
One meme, in particular, stood out from the rest. Yes, we’re talking about the picture of that scrunched up, seemingly confused face Olivia made while she was staring a little too hard at her cue cards after announcing the second runner-up, Miss Peru.
Well, two days after the pageant, Olivia finally took to her Instagram to explain her now viral internet meme. And no, she didn’t accidentally announce the wrong country. In fact, she wanted to avoid exactly just that from happening.
“I don’t think I have ever concentrated so hard on reading in my life than when announcing the winner of Miss Universe this weekend,” she wrote. “I was soooo terrified of reading the wrong country. Apparently I need to work on my reading face and I’m sorry if this was misinterpreted in any type of way. I swear I’m just concentrating on the words. Every girl was beautiful and most importantly sweet and kind.”
Finding humor in it all, Olivia joined in on the fun and even made her own memes! Check them out below.
Now that's iconic!
