“Hygge” is a Danish term that doesn’t have a direct English translation as it more encapsulates a feeling—a palpable sense of warmth and coziness. For Nuuk Taal Lake owner Katleya Nielsen, hygge moved her to transform her family vacation home into a boutique hotel. “I recall developing an overwhelming feeling that this place was meant for more than the occasional visit. I wanted to bring life and warmth back into the home by inviting others to create their own memories and experience this unique location,” she shares.

And thus, the process of turning her family’s private property into a boutique hotel began. The challenge that laid ahead was honoring the history of the time-treasured home while bringing in the functions of a well-oiled hospitality service. “We retained most of the original design and structure in place to keep the essence of the home intact,” she shares. This included the brickwork, wooden beams, and hardwood floors, which gives Nuuk its homely warmth.

The crux that guided Nuuk’s renovation was Katleya’s own personal style and heritage which is a melange of Filipino and Danish culture, having lived in both countries. In one room, you’ll see a locally-made headboard set against a wall of winterland photography, in the dining area, you’ll notice Eames-inspired molded chairs mingling amongst antique Filipino ones. It’s in this lovely mix-match that Nuuk gets its distinct character, along with smaller, more personal artifacts from Katleya and her family’s trips that thoughtfully decorate the area.

Currently, there are eight suites you can book, separated into two areas of the hotel. Rooms three to seven are in the main enclave called the “villa,” while one, two, and eight are in a separate building called the “lake haus.” Each suite is decorated with Nuuk’s signature Scandinavia-meets-South-East-Asia feel, with no two rooms that look exactly the same. Overall, the hotel can hold a grand total of 39 guests, giving each guest the gloriously private escape they seek.

Nuuk holds an in-house restaurant called Ilulli which sees the same fusion of European and South East Asian culture. The chefs offer classics from both cuisines, while also changing up their dinner specials depending on the season. Breakfast is complimentary for all guests of the hotel, and for your other meals, you can opt to dine in Illuli, or, take a short drive to the busier parts of Cavite that are full of other gastronomic offerings.

Of course, the interiors of Nuuk Taal Lake are only half of the experience. Guests see the pièce de résistance of the property when they step outside and see an unobscured sight of the famed Taal Volcano and Lake. Nuuk provides ample opportunity to experience the view—take a dip in the infinity pool designed to look like it spills directly over the lake, enjoy a meal al fresco by the canopy surrounded by trees, walk by the garden that gives private lakeside access, or lounge the day away by the viewing deck that’s dotted with seating areas.

Guests of a more adventurous sort can go kayaking by the lake, or bring their bike for a ride around the spacious four-hectare area. There’s also a pingpong table and dartboard by the lobby-lounge for a bit more recreation. If you decide to bring your little ones, there are kid-friendly activities like kiddie fishing, badminton, and volleyball that they can enjoy.

Katleya shares that no matter what kind of unique experience guests have at Nuuk, what’s shared by all is “what this place makes you feel—as close to a ‘home-away-from-home’ experience.” Indeed, in every corner decorated with storied mementos, bite of well-thought-out food, and quiet moment spent soaking up Mother Nature’s touching views, in Nuuk, you’ll come to know the feeling of hygge.

Nuuk Taal Lake is located at 295 Talisay-Laurel Rd, Km 89 Brgy. Berinayan, Laurel, Batangas. For reservations, you can go to their website or reach them through +63 917 517 6885.
