Anime is seeing a steady growth in popularity worldwide, and with that, the demand for artists and animators has also expanded. Netflix, one of the leading video streaming platforms globally, is investing in the potential of anime by partnering up with Japanese animation studios in launching WIT Animator Academy.

WIT Animator Academy is a six-month training program by Japanese animation studio WIT Studio (the studio behind Attack on Titan) and animation school Sasayuri Video Training Institute which will officially begin in April 2021. Through the program, students will be able to learn firsthand from some of Japan's veteran animators, including Hitomi Tateno whose roster of work includes Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro.

In a press release published by Netflix on February 11, the streaming platform said that it will provide financial assistance to 10 successful applicants of the program.

What does the scholarship cover?

Netflix's financial support for successful applicants include covering tuition fees and providing a stipend for living expenses throughout the duration of the program. They also promised that graduates of the program will go on to work on WIT Studio projects, one of which is a Netflix original anime.

According to a report by Nikkei Asia, Netflix will shoulder the tuition fee worth 600,000 yen (approximately P274,000) and provide a living stipend worth 150,000 yen (approximately P69,000) every month.

Who can apply?

Those eligible for admission into the program include:

  • high school graduates or students expected to graduate from high school by March 2021
  • those between 18 and 25 years old
  • those who live in Japan (Foreign applicants are also welcome to apply, but they are expected to be able to converse in basic Japanese)
