With the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) being declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), many of us are confused and are looking for explanations. What does a pandemic mean and how different is it from an outbreak or epidemic? What can we do to avoid having another pandemic in the future?
A Netflix documentary series called Pandemic: How To Prevent An Outbreak, which was released in January 2020, might just answer all your questions! The Guardian writes that the series is "informative, inspiring—and terrifying."
In the show's trailer, Dr. Dennis Carroll, director of USAID's Emerging Threats Unit, warns: "When we talk about another flu pandemic happening, it's not a matter of if, but when." It's alarming that it's actually happening. Right now.
According to Radio Times, the six-part series looks back at a deadly influenza virus (it killed 50 to 100 million people in 1918) and shows us black and white footage of people in tiny face masks + mass graves being dug. It talks about the current battle to contain Ebola virus in Congo, the case of anti-vaxxer parents, and puts the spotlight on doctors and medical researchers.
