The Plot

First off, let’s talk about the story. Based on the best-selling novels by Julia Quinn and set in England’s Regency era, the series centers on the illustrious Bridgerton family, more specifically their eldest daughter Daphne Bridgerton. Reeling from her dazzling debut onto London’s competitive marriage market, the gorgeous single practically has all the bachelors in her town wrapped around her finger. Unfortunately, her prospects quickly start to dry up when her overprotective older brother, Anthony, begins to rule out any man that so much as looks her way. Her image is only further tarnished by the local society scandal sheet as written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown, an unnamed sly woman who feasts on intrigue and drama.

Enter the Duke of Hastings, a committed bachelor who also happens to be this season’s most desirable catch. Though he and Daphne start off on the wrong foot, they eventually strike up a deal meant to both salvage Daphne’s reputation, and to ward off all the hopeful debutantes lingering around the Duke. In spite of their misgivings toward each other, sparks eventually fly between the pair as they parade a fake relationship for everyone to see.

Packed with regal 18th century garb, scandalous love affairs brewing at every corner, and a sneaky town gossip to fan the flames, it comes as no surprise to hear that Bridgerton is already being pegged by multiple media outlets as the love child of Gossip Girl and Downton Abbey. The comparison, of course, isn’t lost on the cast who are more than happy to take it as a compliment.

“I love Gossip Girl and I love period pieces so mix them together and I think you’ve got the dream show,” lead star Pheobe Dynevor told Preview. “ In a lot of ways, it’s kind of accurate because we’ve got the narration of Lady Whistledown, and gossip in the 18th century. It’s the first version of the tabloids…We follow these young men and women as they find love and they discover themselves. It’s a coming-of-age story as well so in a lot of ways that’s sort of an accurate description.”

The Cast

If you loved Kristen Bell as Gossip Girl, then you’ll absolutely fawn over the legendary Julie Andrews who voices the enigmatic Lady Whistledown. Joining her in the cast are a slew of fresh faces including Pheobe as Daphne Bridgerton, Regé-Jean Page as the Duke of Hastings, and Jonathan Bailey as Anthony Bridgerton. Also part of the ensemble cast are Nicola Coughlan, Claudia Jessie, Ruby Barker, Adjoa Andoh, and Golda Rosheuvel, among others.
