As avid K-show fans, we’d be remiss however not to shed the spotlight on My Liberation Notes, the ongoing JTBC series that’s been jumping in and out of the list for the past two months.

The Plot

If you’ve been hooked on provincial dramas like Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha and Our Blues as of late, then My Liberation Notes should definitely be next on your watch list. 

Set in Sanpo Village, the story centers on the Yeom siblings, three dejected individuals set on escaping their seemingly dreadful lives. One day, the arrival of the enigmatic Mr. Goo causes a stir around them, especially in a town that everybody leaves behind but no one dares move into. Mr. Goo has his own secrets to protect, but the feat proves difficult with gossip following him at every corner and the youngest Yeom sibling, Mi-jung, intent on befriending him.

The Cast

Lee Min Ki, Kim Ji Won, and Lee El lead the cast as the three Yeom siblings. Min Ki (Because This Is My First Life) portrays the only boy and the family’s middle child, Yeom Chang-hee, a hopeless and immature corporate employee who’s surprisingly logical. He once dreamt of moving to the city to get a taste of the high life, but ended up grounded to his hometown.

Fight for My Way and Lovestruck in the City star Kim Ji Won plays Yeom Mi-jung, the youngest of the trio. She’s a timid introvert who’s used to spending her days alone. Fed up by the monotony of her life, she goes out of her way to change her situation. Her first big step? Approaching the new stranger in town.

Rounding out the Yeom siblings is Ki-jung, played by Lee El (When the Devil Calls Your Name, A Korean Odyssey). The eldest of the three, Ki-jung is an ill-tempered worker at a research company in Seoul. She grows tired of commuting back-and-forth from her home to the city, and sets out instead to find love.

Meanwhile, Son Seon Ku, best known for starring in D.P. and Sense8, portrays the outsider, Mr. Goo. His character is a raging alcoholic who acts as if he’s carrying the world on his back. This all changes when he meets Mi-jung.

The Crew

Veteran director Kim Seok Yoon helms My Liberation Notes. You may have already come across his work in dramas like Law School and The Light in Your Eyes. The show marks his second TV project with screenwriter Park Hae Young, best known for penning IU’s My Mister and the rom-com Another Miss Oh. FYI, the two creatives previously teamed up for the 2004 series Old Miss Diary.
