In this heat, we wouldn’t mind going to the cinema every weekend just to cool down with the aircon on full blast… and to enjoy the movies, of course. And if you aren’t willing to brave the heat just to travel to the cinema, there are several exciting movies dropping on streaming platforms in the Philippines.
Here are the movies to watch this May in the cinemas—or at home.
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3
Where to watch: Cinemas
Now showing
The Guardians return in the highly-anticipated third volume of Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn gathers Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Nebula, Mantis, Groot, and Rocket for one last hurrah. In Volume 3, the Guardians embark on an intergalactic mission to save Rocket, who finally gets the spotlight he deserves.
Big George Foreman
Where to watch: Cinemas
Release date: May 10
It’s about time boxing champ George Foreman got the blockbuster treatment. Big George Foreman tells the origin story of the world heavyweight champion. Before he was a legend, Foreman was a child born in poverty who almost died during his first bout in the ring. He then became a preacher, and eventually, the oldest boxing champion in history.
The Woman King
Where to watch: Netflix
Release date: May 12
In case you missed The Woman King in cinemas, the action drama will land on Netflix later this month. While based on a true story, The Woman King is not a historical retelling. It follows a version of the Agojie, a unit of female warriors in the West African kingdom of Dahomey. The Woman King stars Viola Davis, Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, and more.
The Mother
Where to watch: Netflix
Release date: May 12
The Mother might just be J.Lo’s unofficial sequel to Enough, only with a lot more violence. Jennifer Lopez will star as the unnamed Mother, who also happens to be an ex-assassin. When the life of her estranged daughter is threatened, guns start blazing.
Black Knight
Where to watch: Netflix
Release date: May 12
South Korean studios are masters of disaster movies. The latest disaster drama to come from South Korea is Black Knight, which takes place in a dystopian future where air pollution has destroyed the world. In this wasteland, survivors rely on the Knights, delivery drivers who bring vital supplies like fresh oxygen to communities. Black Knight takes “frontliners” to a whole new level.
Air
Where to watch: Cinemas and Amazon Prime Video
Release date: May 12
In case you haven’t seen Air in cinemas yet, the biopic by Ben Affleck will hit Amazon Prime Video soon enough. The movie tells the origin story of the Air Jordans and how Nike convinced the then-rookie Michael Jordan to sign a deal with them. Air’s heavyweight stars include Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Viola Davis.
Fast X
Where to watch: Cinemas
Release date: May 17
“I don’t have friends. I have family.” … And Fast & Furious. Because Fast & Furious is forever. Fast X is the tenth movie in the never-ending franchise, and somehow, Fast X looks even bigger than F9. For one, Jason Momoa will make his Fast & Furious debut, and we can’t wait to see Momoa, Vin Diesel, and John Cena share a screen.
Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan
Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video
Release date: May 18
Another Filipino indie film will arrive on Prime Video, this time with Joshua Garcia at the helm. The actor’s new film, Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan, revolves around his journal, which recounts the horrors and mysteries he encounters in his everyday life. The film is based on the famous book of the same name by Bob Ong.
The Little Mermaid
Where to watch: Cinemas
Release date: May 24
No matter how much hate The Little Mermaid is receiving (mostly from trolls), that won’t stop us from watching this remake. The realistic animation of Ariel’s friends seems a little fishy (see what we did there), but if the trailer is anything to go by, the music is going to be fire.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Where to watch: CinemasÂ
Release date: May 31
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was the best Spider-Man movie ever (sorry, Tom Holland), so Across the Spider-Verse has a lot to live up to. In the sequel, Miles Morales dives into the Multiverse with Gwen Stacy and meets Spiders from, well, across the universe. We’ve got Spider-Punk, Spider-Man India, Spider-Man 2099, Scarlet Spider, Spider-Byte, Iron Spider, Chibi Spider-Man, and the list goes on. But it’s not all fun and games—because not all the Spider-Men get along.
