Time to enroll in Mermaiding 101!

As kids, we have often dreamed of being like Ariel from The Little Mermaid and swimming the ocean far and wide with our tails. Many of us who dreamt of being a mermaid often took swimming lessons to satiate our love of the water. Others would even go as far as taking scuba lessons to explore the ocean or take freediving as a hobby. But still, despite all those avenues, something was always missing: the tail and the look of an actual mermaid.

On social media, there are a lot of posts of professional mermaids in aquariums abroad who perform for crowds of children and adults, but the question remains, how does one become a mermaid? Don't get us wrong, swimming, scuba diving, and freediving are all great, but there is a je ne sais quoi to donning that mono-fin and tail skin that makes it different.

Here's one answer: there are courses one can take to become a fully-fledged mermaid. One such class is the Try Mermaid Course offered by Scuba Schools International, a globally recognized training organization. And thankfully, we found The Pinay Mermaid, a certified mermaid instructor who goes by Mermaid Amariewho offers this course right here in Metro Manila.

Here's how to become a Certified Mermaid With Scuba Schools International (SSI) and The Pinay Mermaid:

The first step to becoming a certified mermaid is to try it. You can take the Try Mermaid course (P2,500), which will introduce you to the world of Mermaiding. It teaches the basic mermaid movements, breath hold techniques, and safety skills necessary to conduct yourself with a tail in the pool properly. The Pinay Mermaid offers this course inclusive of pool fees, locker fees, SSI Try Mermaid completion certificate, use of fins and mermaid skins, and photos and videos taken during the class.

The class is open to people aged six and up with basic swimming training (no need to be an expert diver yet). Taking this class with The Pinay Mermaid is sure to be a fun time. You get to swim, pose and take photos, and learn about the ways of the mermaid life. It's a short class, around three to four hours, in a confined pool space often within Metro Manila, but it is worth your money. Note that the location changes! The Pinay Mermaid makes it a point to take only a few students per batch to maximize pool time and photo-taking opportunities.

Summing up the entire experience of Try Mermaid is this quote from The Pinay Mermaid "There is beauty in power and power in grace through Mermaiding." After the class, you feel a sense of camaraderie with your classmates as if you belong to one mermaid clan. You get a rush of endorphins from the exercise, but most of all, you feel happy just because you've fulfilled that lifelong dream to be a mermaid (at least for a while).

Those who want to continue their mermaid journey after the Try Mermaid course can take a more in-depth class, the Mermaid Course. This class prepares them to swim in their tail in a contained water environment. After that, there is also the Ocean Mermaid Course, an upgrade for those who want to level up their Mermaid Swimming skills and be ready to swim in the seas.

Heck, there is even a course on modeling as a mermaid that covers the ins and outs of posing with a tail on. And, if one wishes to share their passion and make more Mermaid Dreams come true, they can make their mermaid hobby into a profession by taking a Mermaid Instructor Course. The possibilities are plentiful, and being the mermaid of your dreams can easily become a reality.

SSI offers all these courses, and it's just a matter of finding an instructor, which in our case was The Pinay Mermaid. Prices will differ from time to time due to different factors. Don't get overwhelmed; there are a lot of Merfolk out there willing to help and be a part of your journey. There is a growing community of 3,700 plus merfolk called Mermaids PH on Facebook that welcomes hobbyists and professionals alike.
