Dubbed by The Washington Post as one of "the seven wonders of the artistic world," the Martha Graham Dance Company has long been a crucible for raw talent and self-expression. Founded in 1926 by its trailblazing namesake, the company has been graced by some of the most iconic figures in dance, with guest appearances from the likes of Liza Minnelli and Kathleen Turner woven into its storied history.

This year, the legendary troupe drew unexpected attention from Filipino audiences with the debut of one of its newest members: Kisses Delavin. A former actress and Miss Universe Philippines 2021 finalist, Delavin had largely stepped away from the limelight in recent years, leaving behind a near-blank digital slate. But her quiet reemergence came in the form of movement, spotlighted during the company’s Spring 2025 showcase in New York. Clad in a green leotard, she performed a contemporary routine alongside fellow company members.

While fanfare for the ex-Pinoy Big Brother housemate is reaching a new peak, the dance company is also worth paying attention to, especially if one seeks to dance with the greats. With a respected list of alumni and reputable shows held annually, the institution should be on any performer's radar.

Martha Graham is widely credited with establishing a "vocabulary of movement" rooted in her distinct, referential style. Over the course of nearly seven decades, she mentored some of the world’s most influential dancers and choreographers, pioneering a technique that infused dance with social, political, psychological, and sexual dimensions.

Her legacy lives on through the continued influence of the Martha Graham Dance Company, which has shaped the careers of icons like Merce Cunningham, Anna Sokolow, Sir Robert Cohan, and Jacquelyn Buglisi. Before her passing in 1991, Graham was globally recognized for her contributions to the arts, receiving the Key to the City of Paris, Japan’s Imperial Order of the Precious Crown, and the United States’ Presidential Medal of Freedom, among many other honors.
