It’s official: Lovi Poe is going global! The Filipina actress and singer has been cast for a Hollywood movie titled The Chelsea Cowboy, joining the likes of Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike, I Am Number Four), Poppy Delevingne (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), and Charlie Creed-Miles (Peaky Blinders).
Hollywood media outlet Deadline first broke the news yesterday, before Lovi confirmed it with her own Instagram post. “Aaaah….can’t wait to start filming The Chelsea Cowboy in October,” captioned the actress. "Excited to be working with this amazing team of creatives @alexpettyfer @poppydelevingne @idriselba. More details soon! “
Slated for a 2022 release, The Chelsea Cowboy is a biopic that chronicles the rise and fall of John Bindon (Alex Pettyfer), an actor, gangster, and lothario whose successful career later in life was bogged down by his criminal past. As per Deadline, Lovi will be stepping into the shoes of Dana Gillespie, a British blues singer “who employed Bindon as security and also provided him with access to the high life, most notably the island of Mustique where he met Princess Margaret.”
The real-life Dana, now 72 years old, had a myriad of connections, ranging from singers, to actors, to members of high society. A recent biography on the performer even listed down some of her former lovers, which included David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Michael Caine, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon, and Sean Connery.
In a statement for Deadline, the movie’s director, Ben Cookson, officially welcomed Lovi to the project, saying, “The team and I are delighted to have Lovi onboard and can’t wait to see her portrayal of Dana Gillespie – a sixties icon and charismatic singer and actor, whose own life would indeed make an amazing biopic.”
The Chelsea Cowboy is also being executively produced by Idris Elba, an Emmy-nominated English actor best known for starring in movies like Beasts of No Nation, Pacific Rim, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Heimdall.
