Yes, it's true! Liza Soberano and Shay Mitchell are sharing a role on a Netflix original, and we can’t contain our excitement! The two stars have both been cast as the lead voice actresses for Alexandra Trese, the titular main character of the upcoming Netflix Original Anime series, Trese. The much-awaited show is based on the Philippine graphic novel of the same name by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo.
Liza, who will be voice acting for the Filipino language version of the series, is actually a big follower of the original comics. "It’s an honor to be the voice of an iconic character such as Alexandra Trese. I’m a huge fan of Budjette and Kajo’s award-winning Trese comics. Maraming salamat! Excited na 'ko!” said the actress in a statement for Netflix.
Meanwhile, Shay will be playing her English language counterpart, and it’s safe to say that the Filipino-Canadian actress is just equally as thrilled as Liza. “I'm so excited to be a part of a unique and amazing project like Trese, and to voice a character as brilliant as Alexandra Trese. Philippine folklore is rich and fascinating, and I am thrilled to be a part of the team bringing this story to life,” shared Shay.
Shay, a Filipino-Canadian actress, is best known for her role in the cult classic teen drama, Pretty Little Liars. She also visited Manila last 2019 to promote You, her Netflix original series at the time, alongside Gossip Girl alum Penn Badgley.
Set in Manila, Trese is a horror-crime anime series which features Philippine mythological creatures living and hiding amongst humans in the real world. The hero of the show, Alexandra Trese, “finds herself going head to head with a criminal underworld comprised of malevolent supernatural beings.” The anime itself will be produced by Shanty Harmayn and Tanya Yuson of BASE Entertainment, a studio based in Jakarta and Singapore.
