Lee Dong Wook is not one to shy away from unconventional roles. Remember when he played a grim reaper in the hit fantasy K-drama Goblin and a villainous dentist in Strangers from Hell? Well, for his next project, the 38-year-old actor is set to star as a gumiho, a.k.a. a mythological nine-tailed fox—and mind you, it’s the first time ever for a Korean drama to feature a male gumiho as the lead character!

“Its genre is urban fantasy melodrama,” Dong Wook revealed in an interview with W Korea. “I’ve heard that this is the first time there’s been a main storyline about a male gumiho. It’s unique. The director and writer are aiming to put a twist on conventional ideas, and that’s exciting too.”

Tale of Gumiho, which is slated to air in early September via tvN, will tell the story of Yi Yeon (Dong Wook) “who once ruled as a living god of the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range but now works as a public official between this world and the underworld,” according to Soompi. The character is supposedly good-looking and intelligent, which makes it a perfect role for the Hallyu heartthrob. “His main job is to clean up the mess left behind by those who disturb the world of the living while hiding behind the guise of ghost tales. He boasts stunning looks, high intelligence, and great athletic abilities, but he has a self-righteous personality and can be violent at times.

The drama will also star Jo Bo Ah (My Strange Hero, Forest) as Dong Wook’s love interest. She will play the role of Nam Ji Ah, who's a producing director for a program called “Finding Urban Legends,” which will lead her to cross paths with Yi Yeon.
