2. She’s a beauty queen.

Considering her gorgeous looks and constant pursuit of her advocacies, this one’s no surprise. Bo Young was hailed as Miss Korea Daejeon Chungnam in 2000, before pursuing her dream of becoming a news presenter. Although the latter fell through, she eventually turned to modeling which soon opened doors for her in the acting world.

3. Her TV career took off after “My Daughter Seo-yung”.

Since Bo Young’s acting debut in 2003, her most notable roles back then had been for the films Once Upon a Time (2008), and I Am Happy (2009) where she co-starred with Hyun Bin. Her breakthrough in the TV industry, however, came later in 2012 when she was cast as the lead for the romance family drama My Daughter Seo-young. Bo Young played the show’s titular character, and was nominated multiple times for her performance, which includes her first Best Actress nod at the 49th Baeksang Arts Awards. 4. She’s best known for her roles on “I Can Hear Your Voice,” “Mother,” and “When My Love Blooms”.

Just a year later, Bo Young rose to national prominence for her role on the legal fantasy drama I Can Hear Your Voice, alongside Lee Jong Suk. She played Jang Hye-sung in the series, a pragmatic and jaded public defender who encounters a high school boy with supernatural abilities. The role earned her an impressive two Daesangs—the highest honor an entertainer can win at a Korean award show—from the 6th Korea Drama Awards, and the SBS Drama Awards. That said, newer K-drama fans might be more familiar with her work in the 2018 drama Mother, and the 2020 romance series When My Love Blooms.

5. She made a cameo on "Start-Up".

Speaking of recognizing the actress, did you know that she actually made a cameo on the 2020 hit series Start-Up? Yep, she was that iconic girl at the pub who consoled a confused Seo Dal-mi (Bae Suzy), and who also patiently listened to a blubbering Han Ji-pyeong (Kim Seon Ho) drunkenly spill his feelings at the end of episode 10.

6. She’s a published author.

A graduate of Korean Literature in college, Bo Young loves reading books. She finally put her degree to use in 2015 when she released her own book titled Time of Love. It took her three years to write, and is a collection of reflective essays that focuses on love, consolation, and growth.

7. She’s happily married to another actor.

Bo Young met her husband and fellow actor Ji Sung on the set of their 2004 series Save the Last Dance for Me. The pair dated for six years before finally tying the knot in 2013. As of writing, they have two children together, and are constantly supportive of each other’s careers. Ji Sung even recently sent over a food truck and a coffee truck for Bo Young on the set of her tvN drama Mine. The banner on the truck carried with it a sweet message that read, “I am enthusiastically cheering on Lee Bo Young, the most lovable actress in the world, along with the ‘Mine’ team,” and, “Everyone! Take good care of your health until the end, and gain strength.”

8. She avoids showing Disney movies to her children.

Just like most of us, Bo Young grew up watching Disney movies as a kid. However, her interest in the House of Mouse and its array of princesses dwindled as she got older and realized how “passive” they all were. “All they need to do is meet their prince. In Mulan, they even sing lyrics like, ‘You have to marry well, you have to get the attention of men.’ Snow White just sings while her animals clean for her, and while she’s sleeping, a prince comes and kisses her,” said Bo Young in an interview with Cosmopolitan Korea. For this reason, she revealed that she’s been careful about letting her daughter watch Disney films.

9. She’s expressed her support for the “Me Too” movement.

As you can probably tell by now, Bo Young is an advocate of women empowerment. Where most celebrities try to remain silent on sensitive or political issues, the 42-year-old wears her beliefs on her sleeve. When the “Me Too” movement broke out worldwide in 2018, she even expressed her vehement support for the victims of sexual abuse, stating that she’s actively in favor of the cause. “I think it’s a story that needed to come to light at some point,” said the actress. “It was a wound that was bound to fester and burst eventually, and I think it’s in the process of being tidied up right now.”

10. She chose to star in “Mother” so she could speak up about child abuse.

Speaking of her advocacies, another cause close to Bo Young’s heart is the prevention of child abuse. It’s also the reason why she took on her role on the tvN series Mother. She played Kang Soo-jin in the suspense drama, a teacher who essentially kidnaps one of her students after she realizes the the young girl is being abused at home. Bo Young even teared up at a press conference for the show as she explained why accepted the project.

“For a year after the birth of my child, articles about child abuse kept catching my eye,” she started. “Around the time when I was given the offer to appear in this drama, there was a flood of coverage about two or three cases involving children who had been abused and abandoned. That cemented my decision. This is something we need to talk about more. We all have to take more interest in the children around us to make sure they aren’t being abused. I chose this drama because I felt a sense of social responsibility [for abused children] rather than because I thought it would be fun or it would get high viewership ratings.”
