This Local Artsy Milk Tea Shop Looks Just Like a Comic Book

2D-inspired interiors are nothing new, but that doesn’t mean that they’ve stopped being fun and interesting. The concept went viral a few years back, with Japanese and South Korean shops sporting the theme. The 2D Café in the Shin Okubo neighborhood in Tokyo is one of them.


White interiors and fixtures have been outlined with black paint to make them look like they’ve just popped out of a manga (graphic novel), giving the space the illusion of flatness created by ink and paper.

In 2019, Richie Cuna collaborated with Japanese partners to create Kurimi Milk Tea Bar, which was launched in 2020. The beverage shop has a similar 2D aesthetic, which he hopes would create a fun experience for customers as they enjoy the distinctive taste of their milk tea blend. “Unique in taste, and unique in ambiance,” he says.
