Paging all fans of Princess Diana: It looks like we’re getting another movie about the beloved royal soon! Hollywood news site Deadline broke the exclusive last night, and guess who’s set to play the coveted role? None other than Charlie’s Angels star Kristen Stewart. (Now, you’re probably just as confused as the millions of Britons who woke up to this news, but before we get ahead of ourselves, we’re sure you’re dying to know more details about the actual movie.)
Titled Spencer, the entirety of the film will take place in just three days and is set for the House of Windsor in Sandringham during one of Princess Di’s last Christmas vacations in the royal estate. As for the time period, Deadline reports “[Spencer] covers a critical weekend in the early ‘90s, when Diana decided her marriage to Prince Charles wasn’t working, and that she needed to veer from a path that put her in line to one day be queen."
The biopic will be helmed by Chilean director Pablo Larrain, who's most known for his Academy Award-nominated biographical drama Jackie. Meanwhile, penning the script is British screenwriter Steven Knight. “The key is how she discovers during the process of the movie that what she really needs to do is be who she wants to be. And by that, it doesn’t mean she needs to be next to anyone, to be part of anything, but herself and her own children. Diana was many things, but chief among them, she was a great mother," Director Larrain explains in a statement.
Production for Spencer is slated for early 2021.
In light of the news, internet frenzy over the movie has mostly zeroed in on the lady chosen for the titular role, so much so that “Kristen Stewart” was even a top trending topic on Twitter worldwide. That said, most Twitter users expressed their bewilderment over the casting decision.
Alternatively, some fans of K-Stew were quick to come to Kristen’s defense while offering proof that the actress is, in fact, cut out for the role.
