Could there be anything more relaxing than waking up to verdant rice fields? For Shari Adalia, that’s what makes their farmhouse worth every peso.
It was in 2018 when Shari’s family acquired a farm lot in Pampanga. Having a farmer for a father, they knew it was the perfect location where he could happily spend his retirement years. Farming, as it turns out, is a main source of income in the area.
“Most of the people talaga dito nagtatanim,” Shari tells the OG team. “‘Yon yung hobby ng father namin, do’n talaga siya masaya, kaya nag-provide din kami ng lot para sa kanya na nakakapagtanim din siya. Dahil siyempre senior citizen na siya. Ang priority is yung happiness niya.”
Construction began in 2019, but they experienced delays because of the strict protocols when the pandemic broke out. These days, they are enjoying a completed Korean-inspired farmhouse, flanked by bahay kubos.
Traditional and modern
Despite the comforts of the modern home, their father prefers to stay in the hut as it is complete, furnished with kitchen and living essentials. There’s even a hammock outside for everyday napping and relaxing. At the back, land is available for him to plant rice or corn.
Shari and her family’s farmhouse has three floors: the first used to be a function hall for gatherings but currently, it serves as a private staff room.
The second floor is where they spend most of their time. It houses the main bedroom, living area, and kitchen, all in one open space.
“Dito sa bedroom namin, favorite spot din namin ‘to kasi andito na lahat. ‘Pag gusto mo mag-relax, ayan ang bed,” Shari explains. “Meron din kaming small living area; dito nagba-bonding ang mga magpipinsan. Nanonood sila usually, Netflix, mahilig sila.”
Stepping out into the balcony, one can see the adjoining infinity pool, which took five months to build due to the change in tiles used.
“Ang gusto ng brother ko unique yung color ng tiles so naghanap talaga kami ng concept na gusto niya,” Shari says.
Also visible from the area is a cabana where Shari’s brother likes to stay for privacy when he’s working. There’s also an adjacent vacant lot where their family plans on building a fish pond. The plan is that all the food their family will consume in the near future will come from their farm.
The topmost part of the farmhouse is a rooftop, which offers fresh air and scenic views of the surrounding rice fields. It has also been the venue of many of their family’s parties, as well as their occasional family’s barbecues.
Sticking to a plan
The total size of their family’s lot, which measures 2,000 square meters, cost P2 million. The main house, meanwhile, with a total floor area of 1,800 square meters, went up to P5 million due to the added cost whenever they would change materials.
“Actually kasi yung brother ko medyo meticulous siya pagdating sa mga materials na ginamit,” Shari says. “So ‘pag nakita niya na hindi bagay, pinapapalitan. And that is one of the reasons din kaya medyo nagtagal yung construction.”
While Shari recommends the farm life for a healthy lifestyle, she advises those planning on building their own farmhouse to have a fixed plan and investing in an architect or construction expert.
“One of the lessons learned sa ‘min yung nagpaulit-ulit kami sa construction.” Shari recalls. “For example, kinabit na and eventually tatanggalin. So do’n kami napalaki ng expenses.”
