In a recent appearance on Boy Abunda’s Purple Chair Interview series, Miss Universe PH 2021 candidate and crowd favorite Kisses Delavin candidly spoke about her penny-pinching ways during her college days. Recalling the year and a half she had at De La Salle University, she shares, “Sina mommy and daddy, pinapabaunan ako ng P1000 per day… pero I think I would spend mga P100, one week na yun, because I always [ate] at home.”
Kisses’ rather surprising spending habits raised some eyebrows online. Despite this, some netizens defended that it was possible for her to live off P100 a week in Taft, since the condominium she went home to, and most probably had most of her meals at, was just in front of her school.
Her fans saw this statement as another reason for them to continue supporting the young actress. They claimed that despite her affluence even before entering showbiz, Kisses has remained humble and is smart about her money.
A Facebook user also brought up that Kisses' position as an only child in an already well-off family could probably explain why her parents were capable of supplying her a bigger allowance than most Filipino households.
Many Pinoys couldn’t help but exclaim “sana all” at the rather large sum of money Kisses had in her pocket back then, with some making memes to express their envy.
Notably, some medical frontliners batted their eyes at Kisses’ baon, pointing out how significant an amount P1000 already is for them, especially during the ongoing pandemic.
With the issue getting heated between those who are defending the actress, and those questioning her, some netizens pointed out that it wasn’t necessarily Kisses’ fault her parents gave her that much money for her daily allowance.
Twitter user @zekshielove mentioned there are bigger issues worthy of discussion than the 22-year old’s college allowance.
It was also brought up how sharing such an anecdote may not have been the best thing to speak of amid the pandemic, where many are scraping through financially.
On Twitter, user @agasramirez pointed out that Kisses' ability to save money "wisely" may simply be thanks to the actress having a sufficient amount of cash to begin with. She expounds that Kisses being “frugal” about her P1000 a day allowance is an insensitive story to share during these “desperate times” with many struggling to get by. Kisses’ privilege in life back then, and possibly even up to today, may have most probably been what allowed her to lead such a lifestyle.
Harking back to her interview with Boy Abunda, Kisses did mention while she isn’t “kuripot,” her professed thriftiness was inspired by her parents. “I remember when I was a child, my mother and father would work from Monday to Sunday. I learned the value of money… I don’t like to spend money that much… because I know how hard it is to earn that money,” she shares.
