You might recall how Season 2 of the Korean zombie drama Kingdom ended: with the ultimate cliffhanger featuring the shot of a new character played by Jun Ji Hyun. That said, we understand if you just can't wait for the third season, so here’s some good news: Netflix is dropping Kingdom: Ashin of the North later in the year and we’ve got first-look images!
This special standalone episode from the Kingdom universe will focus on the backstory of the mysterious character named Ashin that Lee Chang (Ju Ji Hoon)’s group encountered on their journey to discover the origins of the infected.
Writer Kim Eun Hee and director Kim Seong Hun gave more details about the spin-off episode in a separate panel discussion at the See What’s Next Korea virtual event last Thursday, February 25. “Ashin is one of the main characters in the Kingdom series,” shares writer Kim. “I thought that it would be more apt to tackle that in the special episode, a spin-off, rather than incorporating that into the regular seasons, just to make it more interesting.” Director Kim adds that Ashin of the North is “a building block that has been placed on that foundation [in the Kingdom universe].”
In the panel, director Kim also expressed joy over the success of Kingdom. “We have launched two respective series over the years. And it turned out to be an even more bigger success than we imagined. And it was a very surreal experience and a unique experience to see all the huge massive responses from the global audience in real time.”
Excited? For now, you can re-watch the short teaser that Netflix Philippines released last year!
